What is Generation Connection? The gap between people aged 50+ and youth is growing. Kids are turning to video games and many people aged 50+ can feel left behind in our advancing technological world. Younger people need to develop their social skills and empathy for an older generation, and their elders want to share their extensive knowledge of the world. We are fostering intergenerational relationships for a better world, where BOTH generations can be mentors for each other!
What has Generation Connection done to keep my child safe? We want a safe experience for children on our app. That’s why in our prototyping stages, we have made sure to include child safety features such as parent authentication, linking of child and parent accounts, and the option to use an avatar or a real photo. We have generalized the child’s profile setup information so as not to use Personally Identifiable Information (PII).
How do you match users? Users will select their interests to share, and select what they want to learn, so that they can be connected with other people around the world. We’ve made it simple to select a main category and to choose specific activities within, such as reading a story, learning about world history, or even sharing in learning a new language. We thought long and hard about how to bring together the two generations. We figured out that we can connect them through common everyday interests. We know that there are mentors out there that like to play video games and there are kids that like to learn world history.
What control do I have in using the app? With global collaboration and empathy at the heart of our app, this is where we’re bridging the gap between generations. Users will be able to see possible connections, read brief profile information and see user ratings. When a child or mentor is ready to connect, the parents will get alerts for texts, scheduled video chats and new contact requests. As an added feature for child protection, there will be a profanity filter and smart technology which will mask email addresses and phone numbers typed within texting.
